Thailand is one of the most popular international destinations for Pune travellers: affordable, food-rich and close. Depending on the season, you can fly from Pune with a nonstop service or connect through Mumbai, Delhi or another hub. Check live options on IMPT before you plan — routes change frequently.

Visas

Thailand has offered visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to Indian passport holders for short tourist stays in recent years, but rules change. Always confirm the current policy on the official Royal Thai Embassy website before you travel, and carry your return ticket and hotel booking.

Where to go

  • Bangkok — temples, street food, rooftop bars and shopping. See our Bangkok guide.
  • Phuket — beaches and island-hopping from Patong, Kata and Karon.
  • Krabi — limestone cliffs, Railay beach and the Phi Phi islands.
  • Chiang Mai — old-city temples and cooler hills in the north.

Flights from Pune

Airlines regularly adjust Pune’s international schedule. When a nonstop is operating, Bangkok is about four and a half hours from PNQ. Otherwise, one-stop itineraries via Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or another hub take six to eight hours. Many Pune travellers also drive or take the Expressway bus to Mumbai for a wider choice of direct flights.

  • Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) — main international airport, linked to the city by the Airport Rail Link.
  • Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) — used by many low-cost carriers.
  • Phuket (HKT) — for the Andaman beaches.
  • Krabi (KBV) — for Railay, Ao Nang and island trips.

Money and costs

Thailand is good value. Street food meals cost very little, mid-range hotels are affordable and transport is cheap. Cards work in malls and hotels; carry baht for street stalls, markets and tuk-tuks. Forex cards from Indian banks usually give better rates than airport exchanges.

Suggested itineraries

  • 4 nights — Bangkok only: temples, markets, rooftop dinners.
  • 6 nights — Bangkok (3) + Phuket or Krabi (3).
  • 8 nights — Bangkok (3) + Chiang Mai (2) + Krabi (3).
  • Family trip — Bangkok (3) + Pattaya (2) with day trips to Coral Island.

Etiquette

  • Dress modestly at temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.
  • Never touch anyone’s head or point your feet at Buddha images.
  • Show respect for the royal family — criticism is a serious offence.
  • Smile and stay calm; raised voices are frowned upon.

Practical travel tips

Pune is a large city with two municipal corporations: Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The Pune Metro has two lines, Purple and Aqua, with an interchange at the district court. Check the current network before travelling, as further lines are under construction. The airport at Lohegaon is about 10 km north-east of the centre, sharing its runway with an Indian Air Force station. For long-distance travel, Pune Junction railway station serves the Mumbai–Chennai line. Buses depart from Swargate, Shivajinagar and Pune Station bus stands. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway takes about 3 hours by road, but traffic varies. Monsoon trails near forts like Sinhagad are slippery, so check local advisories. Most foreign visitors need an e-Visa from the official website. The climate from October to February is dry and mild, with cool nights around 10–15 °C. March to May is hot, often above 40 °C. The monsoon from June to September is wettest in July, turning the Sahyadri hills green.

Pune is well connected by road, rail and air. The airport handles domestic flights to all major Indian cities and a short list of international routes. For local travel, the metro is expanding, and auto-rickshaws are common. The city is divided into distinct areas: the old city around Shaniwar Wada, Camp with its colonial-era layout, Koregaon Park with its leafy streets, and the newer suburbs like Hinjewadi. Each area has a different character. The Pune Municipal Corporation area is the historic core, while Pimpri-Chinchwad covers the industrial west. Hinjewadi, west of Pimpri-Chinchwad, is the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park. For day trips, Sinhagad fort is about 35 km south-west, and Lonavala is about 65 km towards Mumbai. Always check current conditions before heading out.

Cultural highlights

Pune is known as the Oxford of the East for its colleges and as Maharashtra's cultural capital. The Maratha Peshwa era shaped the city, with Shaniwar Wada as their seat, built from 1730 and completed in 1732, largely destroyed by fire in 1828. The Aga Khan Palace, built in 1892, housed Mahatma Gandhi from 1942 to 1944. Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died there and have memorials in the grounds. Pataleshwar caves are an 8th-century rock-cut temple to Shiva on Jangli Maharaj Road. Parvati Hill offers views from its Peshwa-era temples, reached by 103 steps. Sinhagad fort is linked to Tanaji Malusare's battle of 1670. The city also has the Lal Mahal, where Shivaji spent his boyhood. These sites provide a deep historical layer to any visit.

Ganeshotsav is the biggest festival, promoted by Lokmanya Tilak from 1893. The five Manache Ganpati, Kasba, Tambdi Jogeshwari, Guruji Talim, Tulshibaug and Kesariwada, lead the procession. Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati draws the largest crowds. Dhol-tasha pathaks, drum troupes, rehearse for months. The Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav in December features Hindustani classical music. Diwali in October or November and Navratri at Chaturshringi temple are also significant. Local food includes misal pav, vada pav, bakarwadi, mastani, Puneri thali and Shrewsbury biscuits from Camp bakeries. Irani cafés are a legacy of the colonial era. For specific restaurants, search online. The cultural calendar is full, so plan your visit around these events.
