East Pune: A Practical Area Guide
East Pune is the city's eastern expanse, from leafy Koregaon Park to the IT districts of Kharadi and Magarpatta. It mixes residential calm, business hubs and airport convenience.
Character of East Pune
East Pune is a broad zone that has grown rapidly since the late 1990s. It includes some of the city's most affluent neighbourhoods, its main airport and two large IT business districts. The area is drier and flatter than the western hills, with wide roads and a more recent, planned feel in parts.
The character changes noticeably from one neighbourhood to the next. Koregaon Park is leafy and quiet, with bungalows and garden restaurants. Kalyani Nagar and Viman Nagar are busier, with apartment towers, malls and eateries. Kharadi and Magarpatta are office districts, busy on weekdays and quieter at weekends. Mundhwa and Wagholi are more mixed, with new developments alongside older villages.
- The Mula-Mutha river runs through the zone, separating Koregaon Park from Kalyani Nagar.
- The airport at Lohegaon sits at the northern edge of Viman Nagar.
- East Pune hosts the Aga Khan Palace, a major historical site.
- Osho Teerth park in Koregaon Park offers a large green space for walks.
Neighbourhood Differences
Koregaon Park is the most established neighbourhood, known for its tree-lined lanes, bungalows and upscale dining. It is close to the river and the Osho Teerth park, and has a calm, residential atmosphere. Kalyani Nagar, across the river, is more compact and lively, with a mix of restaurants, bars and apartment towers along the main road.
Viman Nagar is the airport-side district, with malls, hotels and fast-food outlets. It suits travellers with early flights or late arrivals. Kharadi and Magarpatta are the business zones: Kharadi has the EON IT Park and the World Trade Center, while Magarpatta City is a self-contained office and residential campus. Mundhwa and Wagholi are expanding areas with a more local feel, though Mundhwa has several hotels and breweries.
- Koregaon Park has the Osho Teerth park and several five-star hotels.
- Viman Nagar is the most convenient for airport transfers.
- Kharadi and Magarpatta are busy on weekdays and quieter on weekends.
- Wagholi is the north-eastern edge, beyond Kharadi on the Ahmednagar highway.
Getting Around and Distances
East Pune is well connected by road, but traffic can be heavy on the main arteries, especially the Nagar Road and the Solapur Road. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway ends near the zone, and the airport is about 10 km north-east of the city centre. Pune Junction railway station is roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Koregaon Park by car, depending on traffic.
The Pune Metro does not yet reach most of East Pune. The Aqua Line runs from Vanaz to Ramwadi, with a stop at Kalyani Nagar, but it does not serve Koregaon Park, Viman Nagar or Kharadi. Check the current network for the latest extensions. Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs are common; buses from MSRTC and PMPML connect the main bus stands.
Sights and Activities
The Aga Khan Palace is the principal historical sight in East Pune. Built in 1892, it is a large brick and stone structure set in gardens. Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai were held there from 1942 to 1944; Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died there. The palace now has a memorial and a small museum.
Osho Teerth park in Koregaon Park is a landscaped garden open to the public, with walking paths and a meditation hall. It is a calm place for a stroll. The park is separate from the Osho International Meditation Resort, which has its own entry rules. The Koregaon Park area itself is pleasant for walking, with many garden restaurants and cafes.
- The Aga Khan Palace is about 3 km from Koregaon Park, on the Nagar Road.
- Osho Teerth park is open daily, but check current timings.
- The Pataleshwar caves are in the west, not in East Pune.
- For shopping, Viman Nagar has malls, while Koregaon Park has boutique stores.
Who Should Stay Here
East Pune suits several types of travellers. Business visitors to Kharadi or Magarpatta will find short commutes and good hotel options. Airport transit passengers should stay in Viman Nagar for convenience. Couples and solo travellers looking for a relaxed, upscale base will enjoy Koregaon Park or Kalyani Nagar, with their restaurants and green spaces.
The zone is less suited to budget travellers, as accommodation and dining tend to be mid-range or higher. Families may prefer the quieter lanes of Koregaon Park or the self-contained Magarpatta City. The area is safe and walkable in parts, but a car or cab is useful for moving between neighbourhoods.
