West Pune: Aundh, Baner, Balewadi, Kothrud and Hinjewadi
West Pune is a broad residential and IT corridor stretching from the university to the Mumbai highway. Each neighbourhood has a distinct character, from planned suburbs to tech parks.
Character of the Zone
West Pune is a large, fast-growing part of the city that stretches from the university area towards the Mumbai–Bengaluru highway. It is mostly residential and commercial, with wide roads, new apartment complexes, and a young population. The zone is known for its IT offices, cafés, and shopping streets, but it also has older pockets near the university and the hills.
The area is less dense than central Pune, but traffic can be heavy on main roads during peak hours. The Pune Metro Aqua Line runs through Kothrud and connects to the city centre, which helps. The zone is a practical base for people working in the IT parks or studying at the university, and it offers a mix of modern amenities and green spaces.
- Aundh is a planned suburb with easy access to the university and ITI Road shopping.
- Baner has a lively café and brewery scene along Baner Road, at the foot of Baner hill.
- Balewadi is home to the sports complex and Balewadi High Street's restaurants.
- Hinjewadi is the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, with offices in phases 1 to 3.
- Kothrud and Bavdhan are residential areas towards Chandni Chowk and the highway.
How the Neighbourhoods Differ
Aundh is one of the older planned suburbs, with tree-lined streets, a mix of bungalows and apartments, and a busy shopping stretch on ITI Road. It is close to the University of Pune and has a relaxed, academic feel. Baner, just west, is more modern and trendy, with many cafés, breweries, and offices along Baner Road. It is popular with young professionals.
Balewadi is known for its sports complex and the High Street, a long row of restaurants and shops. It sits next to the Mumbai–Bengaluru highway, making it convenient for travellers. Hinjewadi is almost entirely an IT park, with phases 1 to 3 spread over a large area. Kothrud and Bavdhan are purely residential, with schools, markets, and a quieter pace, though they are close to the highway.
Getting Around and Distances
West Pune is spread out, and distances between neighbourhoods can be 10 to 15 kilometres. The Mumbai–Bengaluru highway runs along the western edge, providing a fast route to the airport and Mumbai. The Pune Metro Aqua Line currently runs from Vanaz in Kothrud through Deccan Gymkhana to the city centre, with further extensions planned. Check the current network before travelling.
Buses from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and local city buses serve the main roads, but frequency varies. Auto-rickshaws and app-based taxis are common, but fares can be higher during peak hours. For short trips within a neighbourhood, walking is possible in Aundh and Baner, but not in Hinjewadi, which is spread out.
- Pune International Airport is about 15–20 km from Aundh, depending on traffic.
- Pune Junction railway station is about 8–10 km from Kothrud and 12 km from Baner.
- The Mumbai–Pune Expressway is accessible from the highway near Balewadi.
- Lonavala is about 65 km west, a 1.5–2 hour drive on the expressway.
Sights and Nearby Attractions
The main sight in West Pune is the Chaturshringi temple, a hilltop temple dedicated to the goddess Chaturshringi. It is a popular place of worship, especially during Navratri, when it draws large crowds. The temple offers views over the surrounding area. There are also several parks and gardens, such as the Pashan lake area, though it is not a formal tourist site.
For day trips, the forts of Sinhagad and Rajgad are about 35–40 km south-west, and the hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala are about 65 km west. These are accessible by road, but traffic on the expressway can be heavy on weekends. Within the zone, the Balewadi sports complex hosts events and has a stadium, but check schedules for public access.
Who Should Stay Here
West Pune suits business travellers and IT professionals, especially those working in Hinjewadi or the offices along Baner Road. It is also a good base for students at the University of Pune, as Aundh and Kothrud are close. Families may prefer the quieter residential areas like Kothrud or Bavdhan, while solo travellers might enjoy the café culture in Baner.
Tourists who want to explore central Pune's heritage may find West Pune less convenient, as the main sights are on the other side of the city. However, the Metro and taxis make it manageable. The area is well served by hotels and serviced apartments, but prices can be higher near the IT parks. For a short stay, choose a location close to your main activities.
