Getting Around Pune
Pune offers four main ways to get around: metro, auto-rickshaws, app-based cabs and city buses. Each suits different trips, times and budgets.
Pune Metro
The Pune Metro has two operational lines. The Purple Line runs from PCMC in Pimpri-Chinchwad through Shivajinagar and the district court to Swargate. The Aqua Line runs from Vanaz in Kothrud through Deccan Gymkhana, the district court, Pune Railway Station, Bund Garden and Kalyani Nagar to Ramwadi. Both lines interchange at the district court station. The metro is the fastest way to cross the city during peak hours. It avoids traffic on busy corridors like the Mumbai-Pune road and the university road. Trains are frequent, air-conditioned and accessible. Check the current network for extensions, as further lines are under construction. The metro suits commuters on fixed routes, especially between Pimpri, Shivajinagar, Swargate, Kothrud and Ramwadi.
For longer straight-line trips across the city, the metro is the most reliable option. It runs on its own tracks and is not affected by road traffic. Stations are spaced about a kilometre apart, so walking or a short auto ride may be needed for the final leg. The metro is also useful for reaching the railway station and the district court. It is less useful for short hops of under a kilometre, where walking or an auto is quicker. Metro stations have lifts and escalators for easy access.
- Use the metro for long straight-line trips across the city.
- Avoid the metro for short hops where walking or an auto is quicker.
- Check the current network for new stations and lines.

Auto-rickshaws
Auto-rickshaws are everywhere in Pune. They run on meters, and drivers are required to use them. For short trips of a few kilometres, an auto is often the most practical choice. You can hail one on the street or find them at stands near markets, stations and hospitals. Autos are cheaper than app cabs for short distances. They handle narrow lanes and congested areas better than cars. During rains, autos are harder to find, and drivers may refuse longer trips. Always insist on the meter, or agree on a fare beforehand if the driver is reluctant. Autos are best for distances under five kilometres.
For late-night rides, app-based auto bookings show the fare upfront and are easier to find. Autos are not ideal for heavy luggage or long distances. Carry small change for exact fares. Check the meter is running and the fare is reset. Avoid autos during peak hours if you are in a hurry, as traffic can make the ride slow. For short trips of one or two kilometres, an auto is often faster than waiting for a bus or cab.

App-based cabs
App-based cab services operate throughout Pune. You book through a smartphone app, and the fare is calculated upfront. These cabs are comfortable, air-conditioned and reliable for longer trips. They are a good choice for airport transfers, intercity travel or when carrying luggage. App cabs cost more than autos and buses. Surge pricing applies during peak hours, rains and late nights. For short trips, the waiting time and cost may not be worth it. For distances over ten kilometres, a cab is often the most comfortable option.
Compare fares on different apps, as prices vary by demand and time of day. Book a cab a few minutes in advance during peak hours. The wait can be longer than the ride itself in congested areas. App cabs are also useful for reaching areas not served by the metro or buses. For groups of three or four, a cab can be cost-effective compared to multiple autos. For solo travel, an auto is usually cheaper for short trips.
City buses
Pune's city bus network is run by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited, or PMPML. Buses cover every major area, including Shivajinagar, Swargate, Hadapsar, Pimpri and Hinjewadi. They are the cheapest way to travel, with fares based on distance. Buses are frequent on main routes, but less so on peripheral ones. Buses can be slow due to traffic and frequent stops. They are best for budget travel, especially for longer distances where an auto or cab would be costly. The bus stand at Shivajinagar is a major hub, with routes to the station, Koregaon Park and beyond.
Check the current route map, as services change. Buses are crowded during peak hours, so plan accordingly. Use the PMPML mobile app or website to plan your route. It shows live bus positions and estimated arrival times. For short trips of a few stops, a bus may not be worth the wait. For longer trips on a direct route, a bus is a good value. Buses also connect to metro stations, allowing a combined journey. Keep a small umbrella or raincoat during the monsoon, as bus stops may not have shelter.
When to use each
The choice depends on distance, time and budget. For short trips under three kilometres, an auto is quick and cheap. For medium distances on metro corridors, the metro is fastest. For longer trips with luggage, an app cab offers comfort. For the lowest cost, take a bus, even if it takes longer. Consider the time of day. During rush hours, the metro and buses are less affected by traffic. Autos and cabs get stuck in jams. At night, buses are less frequent, and autos may charge extra. App cabs are reliable but cost more.
For a balanced approach, combine modes: take a bus or auto to a metro station, then ride the metro. Plan the route before stepping out. Check the metro map, bus routes and traffic conditions on a phone. For the airport, an app cab is the most convenient, but the metro does not reach the airport directly. Take the metro to Kalyani Nagar and then an auto or cab. For the railway station, the metro has a station, but autos and cabs are also available. For long-distance buses, Swargate and Shivajinagar bus stands are well connected by metro and buses.
Practical tips
Pune's traffic is heavy, especially on weekdays. Allow extra time for any journey. The metro is the most predictable option, but it may not cover the exact destination. Autos and cabs are flexible but subject to traffic. Buses are slow but cheap. Use a navigation app to see real-time traffic and choose the best route.
Keep a small umbrella or raincoat in a bag during the monsoon. Sudden showers can delay autos and buses. For early morning or late night travel, app cabs are the most reliable option. Autos may be scarce, and buses may not run on all routes. The metro operates from around 6 am to 10 pm, so check the current timings. For short trips in the city centre, walking is often the fastest option.
