Hinjewadi: the IT hub

Hinjewadi, also known as Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, lies about 20 km west of the city centre. It hosts numerous IT and software companies, making it a primary destination for many business travellers. Staying in or near Hinjewadi reduces daily travel time significantly, especially if your meetings are concentrated there. The area has a range of accommodation options, from business hotels to serviced apartments. However, it is less central, and access to the old city or other business districts requires a longer commute. The metro line to Hinjewadi is under construction, so check the current network before relying on it. For now, taxis or app-based cabs are the most practical option.

Choose Hinjewadi if all meetings are in the IT park. Expect heavy traffic on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway approach during peak hours. Nearby areas like Wakad and Baner offer more dining and shopping options. Book accommodation near your specific office block to avoid long internal shuttles within the IT park. The area has limited public transport, so plan for a car or two-wheeler if you need flexibility. Evening options for dining are expanding, but the area remains quieter than central Pune.

  • Stay in Wakad or Baner for more dining choices.
  • Use app-based cabs for reliable commutes.
  • Check metro construction status before relying on it.

Kharadi: east Pune's tech zone

Kharadi, on the east side of Pune, is another major IT and financial district. It is close to the airport, roughly 10 km away, which is convenient for frequent flyers. The area has grown rapidly with office complexes, residential towers, and commercial centres. Staying in Kharadi suits those with work in the eastern belt. The Aqua Line metro has a station at Kalyani Nagar, a short drive from Kharadi, but the last mile may require a cab. Traffic on the Nagar Road corridor can be heavy, so plan travel times accordingly.

Kharadi is convenient for airport transfers. The Aqua Line metro connects to the railway station and central Pune. Consider staying near the EON IT Park for walkable access. For early morning flights, staying in Kharadi reduces airport commute compared to Hinjewadi. The area also has several shopping centres and restaurants within a short drive. Weekday traffic peaks between 9 am and 11 am and again from 5 pm to 8 pm, so adjust your schedule accordingly.

  • Stay near EON IT Park for walkable access to offices.
  • Use the metro from Kalyani Nagar for central destinations.
  • Allow extra time on Nagar Road during rush hours.

Magarpatta: the integrated township

Magarpatta City, in the south-east, is a self-contained township with offices, residential areas, and amenities like parks and a mall. It is popular for its planned layout and relatively lower traffic congestion within the township. Many IT companies have offices here. Magarpatta is about 12 km from the airport and 8 km from Pune Junction. The metro does not directly serve it, but the nearest station on the Aqua Line is at Ramwadi, a few kilometres away. Staying within Magarpatta offers a calm environment after work, though the surrounding roads can be busy.

Use the internal shuttle services within Magarpatta to move between office buildings and hotels. The township has its own security and maintenance, making it a safe and convenient choice. For meals, there are several eateries inside the township, and a mall provides additional options. If you need to travel to other parts of Pune, factor in extra time for the approach roads, especially during peak hours. The area is well-suited for extended stays with family.

Old centre: for central access

The old centre, including areas like Shivajinagar, Deccan Gymkhana, and Camp, places you near Pune Junction, the metro interchange, and major government offices. It is ideal if your business involves meetings with local firms, universities, or administrative bodies. The cultural and historical sites are also within easy reach. However, the old centre is far from Hinjewadi and Kharadi, with commutes of 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic. The metro Purple and Aqua lines connect to some parts, but you may still need cabs for the final leg. Parking is limited, so rely on public transport or ride-hailing.

For a mix of business and leisure, the old centre offers walkable access to restaurants and heritage sites. The area has a lively street food scene and several Irani cafés. Business travellers with meetings in multiple districts may find a central location like Shivajinagar balances access. The metro interchange at the district court allows easy switching between lines. However, noise levels can be higher, and traffic congestion is common during the day.

Comparing commute times

Commute times vary greatly by time of day. From the old centre to Hinjewadi, expect 60–90 minutes in peak traffic, while from Kharadi to Hinjewadi it can be even longer. Magarpatta to Kharadi is about 30–40 minutes, and Kharadi to the airport is 20–30 minutes. The metro helps for some routes, such as from Shivajinagar to the railway station or PCMC. But it does not yet reach Hinjewadi or Magarpatta. Always check current traffic conditions and metro extensions before planning your stay.

If you have meetings in multiple districts, choose a central location like Shivajinagar to balance access. For single-district work, staying within that district saves time and reduces stress. Consider using ride-hailing apps for flexibility, but be aware of surge pricing during peak hours. Some hotels offer shuttle services to nearby business parks; check availability when booking. Planning your departure times around rush hours can significantly cut travel time.

Practical considerations

Business travellers should consider the climate: October to February is pleasant, while summer months are hot. The monsoon from June to September can cause waterlogging and delays, so factor in extra travel time. Carry an umbrella or raincoat. For visa and entry requirements, most foreign visitors need an Indian visa; many can apply for an e-Visa online. Check current rules before travel. Also, note that Pune's airport shares a runway with the Air Force, so flight schedules can occasionally be affected.

Download offline maps and have a local SIM card for reliable navigation, as data networks can be patchy in some areas. Keep copies of important documents, including visa and hotel confirmations. The monsoon season brings lush greenery but also slippery roads; wear appropriate footwear. Summer heat can be intense, so stay hydrated and use sunscreen. For extended stays, consider serviced apartments with kitchen facilities for more comfort.

Business travel in Pune: choosing your base: questions

Which side of Pune is best for business travel to Hinjewadi?

Stay in or near Hinjewadi itself, such as in Wakad or Baner, to minimise daily commuting. The area has many hotels and serviced apartments. Avoid staying in the old centre if your work is solely in Hinjewadi, as the commute can take over an hour.

Is Kharadi a good base for business travel in Pune?

Yes, Kharadi is convenient for the airport and the eastern IT corridor. It is about 10 km from the airport and has good hotel options. However, it is far from Hinjewadi, so consider your meeting locations before choosing.

What are the advantages of staying in Magarpatta for business travel?

Magarpatta offers a planned, self-contained environment with offices and amenities nearby. It reduces travel within the township and provides a quieter stay. It is moderately close to the airport and central Pune, though not on the metro line.

Should business travellers stay in the old centre of Pune?

The old centre is ideal if you need access to government offices, universities, or the railway station. It has good metro connectivity and cultural attractions. But it is far from the IT hubs, so it suits those with central meetings.

How does the Pune Metro affect business travel between areas?

The Purple and Aqua lines connect PCMC, Shivajinagar, the railway station, and Kalyani Nagar. This helps for some central routes. However, Hinjewadi and Magarpatta are not yet served by metro, so cabs remain necessary for those areas.

What is the best way to commute from the airport to business districts?

From the airport, taxis or app-based cabs are the most direct option. Kharadi is closest, about 20–30 minutes. Magarpatta takes around 30–40 minutes, while Hinjewadi can take over an hour depending on traffic. The metro does not directly serve the airport.

Are there any seasonal factors affecting business travel in Pune?

Yes, the monsoon from June to September can cause waterlogging and traffic delays, so allow extra travel time. Summer from March to May is hot, with temperatures often above 35°C, so plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening. Winter from October to February is pleasant and ideal for business travel, with cool nights and mild days.

Can business travellers rely on public transport to reach Hinjewadi?

Currently, public transport to Hinjewadi is limited. The metro line is under construction. Buses from Swargate or Shivajinagar may run, but schedules vary. Most travellers use cabs or app-based rides for reliability.
