Swedish passport holders are eligible for the Indian e-Visa. You must apply online at the official government website before your trip. The e-Visa allows you to enter India at specific airports and seaports. Check the official site for the latest categories and rules before applying.
What the e-Visa Means
The Indian e-Visa for Swedish citizens is an electronic travel authorisation that removes the need to visit an embassy. You apply entirely online, upload documents, and pay the fee. Once approved, the e-Visa is linked to your passport electronically. It covers tourism, business, medical visits, and conferences, depending on the sub-category you choose.
The e-Visa is valid for entry at 28 designated airports and 5 major seaports in India. You cannot enter at land borders with this visa. The approval is sent by email as an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Print a copy to carry with your passport when you travel.
Before You Travel and On Arrival
When you arrive in a major Indian city such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata, the airport has clear signage for e-Visa holders. Follow the 'e-Visa' or 'Electronic Visa' signs to the designated immigration counters. If you arrive at a non-designated airport, you cannot use the e-Visa and must have a traditional visa.
Travelling between Indian cities is straightforward. Domestic flights, trains, and buses are widely available. You do not need additional permits for most destinations, but some areas like parts of Northeast India require an Inner Line Permit. Check with the local authorities if your itinerary includes those regions.
Staying Longer, Working, or Studying
If you plan to stay longer than the e-Visa allows, or intend to work or study, you must apply for a different visa category. The e-Visa is not extendable or convertible to another visa type while in India. You would need to leave India and apply for a regular visa at an Indian embassy or consulate in Sweden.
For employment, a work visa is required, which involves a sponsoring employer in India. For study, a student visa is needed, with proof of admission from a recognised Indian institution. All such applications are handled by the Indian embassy in Stockholm or the nearest consulate. Check their official website for requirements.
