Norwegian passport holders can obtain an Indian e-Visa for tourism, business, or medical visits. You apply entirely online through the official government portal. The e-Visa is linked electronically to your passport, so no stamp or sticker is needed. You must arrive at one of the designated airports or seaports. Check the official site for the latest eligibility and conditions before you book travel.

What the e-Visa means

The Indian e-Visa allows Norwegian citizens to enter India for short stays without visiting an embassy. It covers tourism, business, and medical treatment. The visa is sent as an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) that you print and carry. You must present it along with your passport on arrival. The e-Visa is valid for entry at specific airports and seaports only. Overland crossings are not permitted with this visa.

The e-Visa is not a guarantee of entry. Indian immigration officers at the port of arrival make the final decision. You must have a return or onward ticket and sufficient funds for your stay. The e-Visa cannot be extended or converted to another visa type while in India. If you need a longer stay, you must apply for a regular visa from the Indian embassy in Norway before travelling.

Before you travel

Apply for the e-Visa on the official Indian government website: indianvisaonline.gov.in. Do not use third-party agents; they may charge extra or provide incorrect information. You will need a digital photo of yourself and a scanned copy of your passport's bio page. The passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. Complete the application at least a few days before your departure, as processing times vary.

After submitting, you receive an acknowledgement by email. Once approved, the ETA is emailed to you. Print two copies: one to carry with your passport and a spare. Check the ETA carefully for any errors in your name or passport number. If there is a mistake, contact the helpdesk on the official site immediately. Do not book non-refundable flights until the ETA is approved.

Arriving in Indian cities

Norwegian travellers with an e-Visa must enter India through one of the designated international airports. Major airports include Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Kochi. Some seaports are also approved. At the airport, follow signs for e-Visa holders. You will go through a separate immigration counter. Have your printed ETA, passport, and boarding pass ready.

After immigration, you proceed to baggage claim and customs. Biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph) are taken on arrival at most airports. The process is usually quick. Once you clear customs, you are free to travel within India. You can move between cities by domestic flights, trains, or buses. The e-Visa allows multiple entries during its validity period, so you can also visit neighbouring countries and return.

Staying longer or working

The e-Visa is for short stays only. If you plan to stay longer than the e-Visa allows, or if you intend to work, study, or volunteer, you must apply for a different visa category. Contact the Indian embassy in Oslo or check the official visa website for options such as the Employment Visa, Student Visa, or Entry Visa. These require a paper application and an interview at the embassy.

For business activities that are not covered by the e-Business Visa, such as long-term projects, you need a regular Business Visa. Medical treatment for more than the e-Medical Visa duration requires a Medical Attendant Visa. Always verify the correct visa type on the official site before applying. Overstaying any visa is a serious offence and can lead to fines, detention, or a ban on future travel to India.

How to apply for the e-Visa

  1. Go to the official e-Visa website: indianvisaonline.gov.in.
  2. Fill in the online application form with your personal and passport details.
  3. Upload a recent passport-style photograph and a scan of your passport bio page.
  4. Pay the visa fee online using a credit or debit card.
  5. Wait for the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) to be emailed to you.
  6. Print the ETA and carry it with your passport when you travel.
  7. On arrival at an e-Visa-designated airport or seaport, present your passport and ETA for biometrics.
