German citizens can obtain an Indian e-Visa for tourism, business, or medical visits. You apply entirely online through the official government portal. The e-Visa is linked electronically to your passport, so no sticker or stamp is needed. You must arrive at one of the designated airports or seaports. Check the official site for the latest eligible ports and visa categories.

What the e-Visa means in practice

The Indian e-Visa allows German passport holders to enter India for short stays without visiting an embassy or consulate. The application is submitted online, and the approved visa is sent by email. You print a copy to carry with your passport. The e-Visa is usually valid for a limited period from the date of issue, and you must enter India within that window.

The e-Visa covers tourism, business, and medical visits. Each category has its own conditions. You cannot work on an e-Visa or take up long-term study. If your travel purpose changes, you may need a different visa. Always verify your eligibility and the specific conditions on the official site before applying.

Before you travel and on arrival

Apply for the e-Visa at least a few days before your departure. The application requires you to upload a recent photograph and a scan of your passport's bio-data page. Pay the fee online using a credit or debit card. After approval, you receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) by email. Print this document and carry it with you.

On arrival at an Indian airport or seaport designated for e-Visa holders, proceed to the e-Visa counter. Immigration officers will verify your ETA and passport. You will have your fingerprints and photograph taken as part of the biometric registration. This process is quick. Keep your boarding pass and ETA handy.

Arriving in big cities and travelling

Major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Kochi have airports that accept e-Visa holders. From the airport, you can take a prepaid taxi, app-based ride, or airport bus to your accommodation. Public transport within cities includes metro trains, buses, and auto-rickshaws.

Travelling between cities is straightforward by train, bus, or domestic flight. Indian Railways has an extensive network. Book train tickets online in advance. For flights, check domestic carriers. Keep your passport and a copy of your e-Visa with you at all times, as hotels and transport providers may ask for identification.

Staying longer, working or studying

The e-Visa is not suitable for long-term stays, employment, or formal study. For those purposes, you must apply for a regular visa at the Indian embassy or consulate in Germany before travel. Categories include employment visa, student visa, and entry visa. Each has specific documentation requirements.

If you are in India on an e-Visa and wish to extend your stay, extensions are generally not permitted. You must leave India before the visa expires. For any change in purpose, such as taking up a job or enrolling in a course, you need to exit India and apply for the correct visa from your home country. Always check the official site for the latest rules.

  3. Upload a recent passport-style photograph and a scan of your passport's bio-data page.
